Lu: “Beneath___The Mask” is a made-up eyewear collection for my school studio project. It aims to reignite conversations centred on the journey of the Cheongsam from its rise to popularity in the 1930s to the present day. Our campaign marks the beginning of many chapters for the brand, aimed at making its impact within the local Cantonese Diasporic Community.

Our “2025/2026 Spring-Summer Eyewear Collection” comprises two line-ups: Conceptual and Commercial. The line-ups celebrate innovation and tradition, emphasising their synergy in each of our unique designs. The appreciation of the cheongsam is translated into five cohesive designs, incorporating the recognisable Pankou knot as the collection’s hallmark. Considering the intricate Chinese motifs, the collection mixes these motifs with shapes such as the classic cat-eye, oval shape, and shield.

All five of the members’ designs were modelled on Blender. Ashley C.’s, Monica’s and Sharmaine’s conceptual pieces were picked for physical production. The names of the conceptual designs are MID-AUTUMN DREAM 中秋梦 (Sharmaine’s), BLOSSOMING PEARL 珠春 (Monica’s), EVERGREEN 四季常青 (Edeline’s), ETERNAL SNOW 千雪 (mine), SMALL BLESSINGS 小幸 (Ashley C.'s).

For my elective module this semester, I had taken up Immersive Media & Extended Reality. I used Microsoft’s Mixed Reality ToolKit (MRTK) with Unity (a game-building software) and scripted some code for interactions with C#, such as clicking anywhere to make a plane disappear, hiding and showing objects, and rotating objects. Our eyewear had been imported into unity with the ability to change frame material and colour, the pankou material, and remove motifs such as flowers from some of the designs.
